[Memory function in autism has been studied for decades.](https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism_and_memory) The research is fascinating to me because I have high-functioning autism and it helps me describe things I already implicitly know about myself. People with high-functioning autism such as myself have both difficulties and strengths in memory compared with neurotypicals.

Driving with autism is challenging sometimes. I'd like to share some of the difficulties I've faced driving as a person with high-functioning autism. Remember that I'm just one person with autism. Autistic brains are more different from each other than neurotypical brains, so the experiences I'm sharing here only reflect my life, not that of every autistic person.

I've been considering writing about high-functioning autism for months now. I'm not used to sharing much about my life here, but I think what I have to say about autism can do a lot of good. Maybe it can help others be more understanding and empathetic towards autistic people.

Since I diagnosed myself with autism and some people deceive themselves into thinking they have conditions they don't, I felt it necessary to provide evidence of my autism to readers so I'd have credibility writing about the topic. So, in the middle of last year, I wrote an entry listing [my reasons for believing that I'm autistic](/2022/05/16/coming-out-as-autistic/).

Learning I'm autistic and realizing what that meant brought me a huge amount of relief. From a neurotypical perspective, that might not make a lot of sense. You might be thinking "How could it bring you relief to learn that you're autistic? Wasn't it depressing?" Just the opposite actually and I'll explain why. However, keep in mind that I'm just one autistic person. I don't speak for everybody else.

Everybody masks, to an extent. We don't swear around grandma. We show off around our those we're attracted to. We pretend to like our job more than we do when the boss is around. Those of us who are depressed or heartbroken pretend to be fine in public. It's not exactly deception. We just don't want everyone in our lives seeing every side of us, for the sake of things going smoothly in social situations.
