American democracy is in serious danger. Robert Reich, American professor, author, lawyer, political commentator, and previous Secretary of Labor created a video explaining how [Trump loyalists are rigging the upcoming 2024 presidential election](https://yewtu.be/embed/gV5VKW_fPVc?local=true).
The twice-impeached [wannabe dictator](/glossary/) and his cronies should be prosecuted for their involvement in the [January 6th coup attempt](https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_United_States_Capitol_attack) and barred from ever holding public office again. That's the only reasonable outcome given what happened that day.
We also need to pass legislation to strengthen and ultimately save American democracy. Here are just a few ideas to get started on that:
* automatic voter registration for all eligible voters
* ranked-choice voting (first-past-the-post inevitably leads to two-party rule)
* prohibit undue burdens on the right to vote (no voter suppression measures)
* give prisoners and felons the right to vote
* nonpartisan commissions for drawing congressional maps (end gerrymandering)
* abolish the filibuster (it's undemocratic)
* abolish the electoral college (it's undemocratic)
* public financing of elections (weaken the power of lobbying)
* require all congressional candidates to disclose political donations
* ban members of congress from owning specific stocks (it's insider trading)
* require all congressional candidates to disclose their tax returns
